Please review these frequently asked questions:
- How do I post a new ad?
- Browse to the page for your geographical area. A link for posting is available just below the map.
Start at the home page.
- How do I manage a previously-posted ad?
- Go to your ad management page. A list of ads you've posted will be displayed.
Select the ad and review your management options. Note that a link to the ad management page is available at the top
of every page after you've logged in.
- How much email will I get?
- We know you're drowning in email, so we make a serious effort to reduce the amount of email you receive.
When you subscribe to the ads for an area, you will receive an email announcing the posting of new ads.
You will not receive email from other people in the group who are interested in items.
You will only receive an email when the poster closes the ad if you expressed interest in the ad.
We may also need to send you occasional system information.
- Is my password secure?
- Yes! When you first registered, we encrypted your password in such a way that even we can't tell what it is!
If you've forgotten your password, please complete this form.
- Will I be spammed?
- No! Your email address is never displayed on the site or in the emails that we send on your behalf. We will
never sell/rent/give your email to anyone - unless we get bought out.
- How can I change my email address?
- Visit your settings page.
- How can I email the poster?
- First, use the site to reply to the ad by clicking the "Contact the poster" link at the bottom of the ad.
You will have the opportunity to send a message to the poster at that time.
If they want to email you, you'll receive and email from an anonymous account, like 'anon-1234@localdataplace.com'. If you reply to
that email, the poster will receive it, also anonymously. Your identity is always protected.
- How can I email someone who responded to my ad?
- On the ad management page, there's a link for 'Secure email'. Your email address will not be shown to the user,
though they will have the ability to reply.
- What is an RSS XML feed?
- RSS (perhaps "Real Simple Syndication") is another way to access ads from the site. The most recent
headlines can be displayed on your favorite portal or using other software. To use the RSS feed, right-click
the
icon on our site and copy the URL ("shortcut"). Take this URL to an RSS reader, including
my.yahoo.com and add it to your home page. Note that the RSS feed will match
the list of ads you've selected, including keywords and categories.
- Do you accept all ads?
- In trying to provide a service that is useful to the local communities, there are some ads that are not appropriate
and will be removed. We have found most MLM, 'puppy' ads, lead generation and those posted in multiple areas or by international accounts
to be inappropriate.
If you have any questions, please email support@localdataplace.com.
- Do you hate Freecycle, or what?
- No! As Freecycle users ourselves, we got frustrated in trying to use Yahoo Groups as the distribution and management tool.
As Silicon Valley entrpreneurs, we didn't want to just complain about a bad situation. We created this site to provide a
set of tools that were specifically designed for the purpose of recycling in the local community. We're not trying to
replace Freecycle (the concept or the company).
